It's one of this well-scoped apps that doesn't try to do too much and would suffer bloat if it added every user suggestion. It even has modest time-tracking capabilities, a report of intervals worked and CSV export if you want to geek out your analysis. Type in what you're working on, press the "Play" icon to start, and get to it. As a timer with reporting, Be Focused is great. I find the Windows version more convenient, since most of my work is at the computer, but I'm glad for the phone version syncing with it when I'm on the run or planning. I use Be Focused Pro daily, both on my iPhone and Windows. Overall, great product, but for my needs I'd love some adjustments! (I sometimes track my words written per hour in a spreadsheet, so the little differences matter there.) The only options are to let it run to 20 or "skip" entirely, so I can't get an accurate accounting of my time later. Also, if I work for 18 out of 20 minutes and have to stop, it won't record that interval correctly. It would be nice to have a default schedule in settings, but be able to modify the length of the current interval on the fly. If I sit down with 18 minutes to work, or 35, I can't edit the interval for a one-time session without going into settings and modifying the entire schedule, which I then have to change again next time. I have an ideal schedule set up in the app - e.g., 8 intervals of 20 minutes each - but more than half the time that's not how my day looks. Sometimes I'm setting out to work on something (writing specifically) based on the amount of time I have available, rather than an ideal schedule of X intervals of X minutes each. I'm a busy mom with several types of work on my plate every day. I do wish I could edit intervals on the fly, though. I like the way this app works (Windows OS), and how it tucks away neatly while you're working.

You can reduce the file’s resolution or data rate to help with this. If you’re uploading video content, you want to publish the best video quality possible at a size that’s accessible to the largest possible audience. While some large high-resolution files might play well on high-quality PCs, creators of video content also have to remember many people watch videos on smartphones, older PCs, or with slower Wi-Fi or cellular connections. But if you plan to host the video yourself or want it smaller to share the file more easily, reducing the size of video files is helpful for your audience. Most social sites like Facebook and YouTube will make your video smaller for playback across a variety of devices when you upload. Then, when you export, Media Encoder will automatically switch back to using your high-resolution sources. Compress video files to a more manageable format like MP4, helping make your workflow more efficient. ![]() You might create proxy files, which use a lower data rate but maintain the aspect ratio, for a smoother editing experience. Many video files, like those from a high-end camera, are large and can demand a lot from your machine while you edit, whether you work in Windows or on a Mac. Using Resi’s hardware or software encoders, broadcasters can have peace of mind that their videos will be delivered without any interruptions. If you are working with high-resolution source files, such as 4K video, reducing the file size of videos also saves time in production. Along with its hardware encoders, Resi also offers ProPresenter Stream, which is a software encoder that works with the broadcaster’s own hardware. Every bit of video is stored during each step of the capture and transmit process, so broadcasters won’t lose any content even during network outages. Resi offers multiple hardware encoders that are highly resilient. This helps ensure compatibility and optimal playback on a wide range of devices around the world. In fact, many broadcasters use cloud video transcoding to create multiple versions of a video with different formats, codecs, bitrates, resolutions, and more. Broadcasters choose one or more container formats depending on which video players their audiences use.Īlthough video files may be encoded into one format, transcoding software can convert video files into another format as well. The most popular container formats include WMV, MOV, and MP4. Once video files are compressed, they’re packaged into a video container format that includes the audio codec, video codec, closed captioning, and any other relevant metadata. ![]() While VBR encoding generally leads to better results, there are situations-such as live event streaming-where CBR may be necessary. Constant bitrate streaming (CBR) uses the same bitrate throughout the entire encoding process, while variable bitrate streaming (VBR) adjusts the bitrate dynamically based on the contents of the video. When encoding a particular video file, there are two common techniques video compressors use. Many broadcasters choose to encode their video content at multiple bitrates, and modern video players can use adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) to adjust the video quality in real-time. Bitraterefers to the amount of data stored for one second of video, which means that lower bitrates usually correspond to a lower quality. The codec that broadcasters choose will depend on their budget, compatibility requirements, whether they’re live streaming, and many other factors.īesides the compression algorithm or codec itself, the bitrate is an important factor in the file size and quality of a video. Common video codec formats include H.264, H.265, AV1, and VP9. Codecs also convert raw video into a digital format that’s suitable for playback. Meanwhile, lossy compression removes noticeable detail from the video file, which could lead to pixelation or other perceivable degradations.Ī video codec- short for encoder and decoder-is the software necessary to both compress and decompress a video file. Compression algorithms that only remove redundant information like multiple identical frames without reducing the video quality are considered lossless. There are a number of video compression options that use different algorithms for choosing which data to eliminate. ![]() That’s why compressing video is crucial for over-the-top (OTT) streaming or delivering video content directly to viewers using the Internet. SolutionĪ heatmap may help, showing the most point-heavy parts of the chart. So while a chart needs enough data to form a visible correlation or pattern, there is a point where more data becomes less helpful. If there is an over-plotted scatter plot chart, patterns are hard to see, as it is just a giant blob. Disadvantages of Scatter Charts Can Have Too Much Data The maximum and minimum values can be seen on scatter plots, which is important to understand the entire data set. Not only that, but for those wanting to make a scatter chart, they are simple to create. Their purpose is easily recognized, and its data is easy to digest. Perhaps because of its popularity, scatter plots are immediately understood. Not only does it show a relationship between two data points, it shows a whole pattern or trend over a data set. This is arguably the best chart to show relationships between two variables. Scatter charts have multiple benefits and advantages. Does the weather influence sales? The day of the week? What about the number of clothes on a rack? Are more clothes sold if there are more on display? Benefits of Scatter Charts While this simple scatter chart may not drill down and show all the variables, such as location, the recentness of renovations, or size of the garden, it will still give buyers and sellers an idea of what the market is doing and where a house may fit on the scale.Ī business may want to see if there is a relationship between sales volumes and some other variable. These lines help to make trends very clear to the viewer. These lines are generally plotted by the software, although they can be added manually. Consider adding size and color variations to dots in order to include more relevant data in a way that keeps it easily understood. Unlike other chart types, if done correctly, scatter charts are not confusing with more data. With scatter plots, it is often better to include more data and variables, not less. If there is reason to suspect they are incorrect, or if they do not add value to your story, it could be wise to exclude them. Keep the scale evenly distributed across both axes. Be very careful when deciding if an accordion is needed or not. While there may be some instances where a scale accordion is required so that the data is presented more accurately, these instances are few. There are a few simple tips to make sure your scatter chart presents information cleanly and without any distortion to the data. A trend line is drawn on the chart to emphasize the direction and strength of the trend. In order to clearly show these relationships and trends, many scatter charts utilize trend lines. A weak correlation will have more data points spread out. Weak or strong: The stronger the correlation is, the closer the dots will be together.Linear or nonlinear: A linear-straight-correlation can be formed through the data points, but a non-linear correlation might show a curved relationship. There are other patterns to be found within a scatter chart: An even scale is created on both axes, and then a mark or dot is made at the point that represents the intersection of the two coordinates. The X is the horizontal line with the independent variable and the Y is the vertical with the dependent variable. Like most other graph or chart types, a scatterplot has an X and a Y axis. Laura Gao for NPR Daily errands like grocery shopping can increase your NEAT.ĭigesting and metabolizing food takes up another sliver of our daily energy, roughly about 10%, and likewise cannot be changed significantly. "There are some things that can maybe change your basal metabolic rate, but not drastically." "That's for the most part not modifiable," explains Seth Creasy, an exercise physiologist at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. More than half of those calories go toward supporting basic bodily functions, what's known as our basal metabolic rate. Much of our daily energy expenditure is relatively fixed. NEAT fills in the slack in your energy expenditure Here's what to know about how NEAT works and how to get more of it. What's clear is that many of us who live screen-based lives have the capacity to inject more NEAT into our daily rhythms, not necessarily through seismic changes in our lifestyle, but small-scale ones that mostly just require a shift in mindset. They've also found that people of the same size can have dramatically different levels of NEAT, based on factors like their job and where they live, as well as their biological drive to get up and move around. They've learned that even small behavior changes can amplify or diminish how much NEAT you get, and this can shape your health in powerful ways. Knockout City does get plenty of things right though, most importantly the controls and gameplay feel incredibly smooth. These are far from world-ending issues, and can easily be rectified in future updates, but they were enough to frustrate. Most competitive games will showcase player stats in the after match screen but instead, Knockout City's menu requires you to flick through a couple of menus to see how you and your teammates performed.
